Homo floresiensis is an extinct species in the genus Homo. The remains of an individual who would have stood about 1.1 m in height were discovered along with stone tools in 2003 at Liang Bua on the island of Flores in Indonesia.

Partial skeletons of nine individuals have been recovered, including one complete skull, referred to as "LB1".These remains have been the subject of intense research to determine whether they represent a species distinct from modern humans; the dominant consensus is that these remains do represent a distinct species due to genetic and anatomical differences. Initial dating of the hobbit remains gave the species an age range of 74,000 to 17,000 years ago. However, dating of the associated tools and sediment deposits where the remains were discovered suggests H. floresiensis may have lived from as early as 95,000 years ago until about 12,000 years ago meaning they may have lived alongside us modern humans, This would make it the longest lasting non-modern human. It also means they would have lived longer than the Neanderthals (H. neanderthalensis), which became extinct about 24,000 years ago.

The island itself is prone to dwarfism not just in humans, but also in animals like the pygmy elephant. It is believed this phenomena happened due to scarce island recources. Here is an image of what a female homo floresiensis may have looked like.
